Karitane Cemetery

Karitane Cemetery overlooks the entrance to the estuary in Karitane and contains only a few marked graves. Many are unmarked by headstones. Karitane is historically a Maori area and the local iwi have rights over who is to use the cemetery.
The cemtetery site is the original location of the first Mission House built for the Weslyan missionary Reverend James Watkin who landed at Waikouaiti on 15 May 1840.
